What is Face Rolling

Facial rollers seem to be everywhere these days but do you know what they're all about if and if you are ready to give it a try, or even already using one, do you know what features and benefits you should you be looking for?

Facial rollers have been a trend for some time now so you’ve no doubt seen them in your social media feed or have friends using them. But why exactly are people massaging their faces, what is it all about and do you know the benefits you should expect from it… because as you know not all all things are created equal.

Face rolling tools are typically made from jade or rose quartz although there are a few other lesser known crystals. They’re designed to be used on the face and neck to gently massage and stimulate the lymphatic system to get rid of toxins, decrease puffiness, massaging muscle tissue and stimulate blood-flow.

But what is it about stimulating blood flow that is so beneficial to your skin?  Well more blood flow means more nutrients and more oxygen are being carried to the skin. And more nutrients and more oxygen promotes cell turnover, and cell regrowth is what’s vital for the holy grail of anti-ageing: collagen production. In addition, more blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals. Free radicals are those pesky things (unstable atoms if you speak Science) that damage cells in the body and are responsible for breaking down our skin's collagen causing wrinkling, dark spots, fine lines and sagging skin. You’ll also enjoy a natural glow post rolling.

While most standard rollers are designed with a single smooth stone, others are precisely crafted to provide even more benefits. Cue the Face Sculptor. With a double-headed roller it gently grabs the facial muscles, which not only feels heavenly but can also tone and lift your complexion. When used correctly it can sculpt the eyebrows, carve cheekbones and reshape the face for a gentler ageing process.

Ok so why Rose Quartz? Rose quartz is better known for its wrinkle-reducing benefits than jade. Rose quartz also stays cooler for longer whereas jade is adaptive in nature and tends to warm with skin contact. This cooling effect also improves skin-cell turnover and can help keep skin firm by reducing inflammation, something that also breaks down collagen over time. A rose quartz roller should also last longer because jade is a softer stone and can encounter wear and tear with repeated use.

Face rollers are safe to use every day and is recommended for best results. Even if you only have a couple of minutes each day you will see the de-stressing and de-puffing benefits. The process is also meditative and relaxing –and don’t we all need a little more of that these days. Being a habitual jaw clencher (and frowner) it’s ability to ease muscle tension is just one of the many reasons why I love this tool so much.
